Thornton Heath Leisure Centre

London Borough of Croydon’s prestigious new £8.7m leisure centre is situated in the heart of Thornton Heath and sets a high standard for new buildings in the area, whilst providing local people with first class leisure facilities.

Comprising a 6-lane 25m competition pool, a separate shallow pool with a private bathing facility for ethnic minorities, a 4 badminton court sports hall, 70-station fitness studio, dance studio, creche, café and a Healthy Living Centre providing complementary advice and therapies.

The building’s gently curving façade steps back to create a new external public space on the High Street overlooked by the fully glazed café which also enjoys views into the shallow pool. Natural light penetrates the dramatic double height foyer and main circulation route connecting all the facilities.

The expressed steel structure and exposed ductwork give the building an industrial aesthetic which is softened by the muted colour palette and extensive use of glass.
