Mountbatten Leisure
Centre
A new landmark on the Portsmouth skyline was created with the extension of the Mountbatten Centre dry facilities with a new 50m international competition pool, teaching pool, and health and fitness suite achieving BREEAM “Very Good”.
A dramatic wave-form roof expresses the pool function and sweeps down to provide solar shading to windows that allow views out to the parkland setting. A high-tech, elevated tube houses the health & fitness suite with fantastic views over Tipner Lake, part of the historic Portsmouth Harbour SSSI.
A naturally top-lit foyer and café form an attractive and dynamic link between the wet and dry; the new and old, whilst overcoming access issues inherent in the original building.
The award-winning extended centre was officially opened by HRH The Princess Royal. It was the chosen venue for the Amateur Swimming Association’s Facilities Conference entitled Pools for the Future - Sustainability, where the ASA launched their new National Facility Policy.
