XC Extreme Sports Centre

The exciting design for XC reflects the nature of the activities contained within and comprising covered skate/bmx park, climbing wall, indoor caving, and high ropes course, as well as local youth facilites including a music recording studio, performance studio, cafe and councelling rooms.

Fundamental to the project was the close involvement of the local youth in every aspect of the project. The design appeal of the building won the support of the youth and helped the project achieve the maximum MyPlace funding of £5m towards the project. The youth were also involved in the development of the design, selection of contractors and preferred designs for the extreme sports activities.

The Skate Park, Climbing and High Ropes are essentially external spaces covered and protected from prevailing wind/rain but with ample natural lighting and ventilation. This helped make the project viable by keeping the capital costs within budget and minimising running costs; whilst maintaining the full range of activities within the Centre and keeping the carbon footprint to a minimum.
